Shimone: One Scarf Wrap with a Twist!

We are loving this new wrap style the “Shimone” created by our awesome Tichel Sister Shimone Mackie!

shimone-16

Can be done with a single thin scarf or even a thicker pashmina, making it ideal for a year round wrap style!

It also works beautifully with 2 scarves.

Quick enough for an everyday wrap with a little flair, yet can also be dressed up with a fancier scarf and accessories for more formal occasions.

shimone

Here’s how to wrap it!

To create the Shimone with 2 scarves, tie your first scarf , wrap and tuck one tail, then add your second scarf, wrap and tuck one tail, then complete with your 2 remaining tails as shown in the video.

We love seeing all the variations, and how our Tichel Tales ladies made it their own!

Have a wrap style you’d like see featured?  Or one you’d like to share?  Leave a comment or drop us a note- we’d love to hear from you!

What are you so afraid of?

chaya-after-sahara

What do you see/think when you see this picture?

Do you wonder- Pretty tichels!  I wonder where she got them?

or

A 2 scarf wrap!  How did she do that?

or maybe like me- Ba Bam!  Wow!  Her eyes are really popping! 😀

That was the first thing that went through my mind when I saw her picture.

Maybe you’ll recognize her- that’s Chaya.  Co-founder of this Tichel Tales blog, and my dear friend. Smiling through her tears.

And then- I read the post that went with the pic.

“This is what 2 shimmery scarves in a turban with tails look like after someone tried pull my wrap off and wanted to send me back to the Sahara I come from. The store manager and I are friends, he walked me to my car. Shaking at the parking lot at home now. Grateful for washing machines that will wash the spit out. Off to take a shower now.”

My jaw just dropped.  This isn’t the first time, or the second time, or even the third time something like this has happened to her.  In fact I’ve lost count. And every time it happens, I am shocked and saddened again, and my heart hurts for her.  And for everyone who has ever experienced something like this.

I want to share with you a blog post one of our Tichel Sisters, Anjae. H. of MommasBlackBird wrote in response~

What are you so afraid of?

“What are you so afraid of?
Am I hurting you in any way?
Are your children in danger if they walk past me in the street?
Will you be scared in some way if I speak to you and ask you for directions, because I am not from around here, you see?
How long are you going to stare at me, before you just walk away and mutter a slur under your breath?
What will it take for you to see that I am not a threat, but a lesson for you instead?
Why do you have such a distaste for a glorious piece of fabric?
Do you stop to ask me why I wear this crown or do you just assume something with your hateful stares?
What is it that is in the fabric that triggers you to grab for my covering and yell at me?
Why are you so afraid?
Do you know me, to be afraid of me and the garment I have chosen to adorn MY head with?
Have you come to the conclusion that I am just another one of “them” that needs to “go back to where they came from!”? But in reality, we all originated from one spot!
Our origins are intertwined, but you do not see that, you only see what frightens you…
What are you so afraid of?
It’s just a beautiful scarf that means many different things to so many different people.
What are you so afraid of?

This is for all the women AND men who have ever been harassed for the choice to cover for whatever reason. Covering is a personal choice and no one should ever have to fear for their safety because of a personal choice they have made for THEMSELVES!

Be kind to each other.”

When DID it become ok to treat another human being this way? And for a piece of fabric?!
What this world needs is more love and kindness.  More respect for each others differences. Instead of fear or anger because something is different- let’s Celebrate what makes us unique!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another shared this video about not being afraid to be yourself:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And yet another reacted with humor and created this lighthearted meme:

when-you-cover-your-hair

I mean, really! 😉

Have you ever experienced something like this?  What did you do?  Did it affect how you wrap?  Share with us your stories in the comments below.

For every awful experience like this, take hope, there is a good one too. For every hate filled tirade, there is a smile and warm exchange and sometimes even new friendships and greater understanding.

Whatever the reason you wrap/cover-We want you to know you are not alone. We are here to share, learn from, lift up, and encourage each other. Always treating each other with kindness and respect.

It’s the Tichel Tales’ way.

Ticheled for Work

13708351_10154398173859973_7148302451709459759_o (1)

We all know how to wrap for informal occasions, lazy days, days with friends, casual Friday at work, but how about more formal business settings?

In our fb group Tichel Tales I’ve seen the following questions:  “Which wrapping style is good for formal occasions like a wedding or graduation?” “What are some styles I can work with in a business environment?”  And when inviting ladies to share pics of themselves in their work wraps,  I was asked,  “I am a stay-at-home-mother, why would you need my pictures?” To answer the last question first: “Motherhood is a full time job where there is no vacation, or after work hours.  So yes, your wraps are needed too.”

When working in an office, make sure that you familiarize yourself first with the dress code. Ask your manager or HR contact for a written copy of the dress code.
When you don’t work there yet and go to the job interview unwrapped, make sure you ask about the dress code. In my country it is common practice not to hire a woman who is covered, whether it’s a Tichel, a Hijab or a Turban. I even had several recruiting agents ask me to go to the job interview uncovered, because they knew I wouldn’t get the job. And yes, they said that they knew it was against the law, but it is what is happening in the real world. With my current job I started uncovered, but started coming in occasionally with my head covered. Some wraps were given an OK and others not.  Our dress code changed, to incorporate when any kind of head covering was okay and when not. And which kinds of head coverings are not allowed (i.e. a baseball cap).

Some companies, or  a department within a company, or government bodies (i.e. police, public schools, fire department, stores or sales departments) won’t allow head covering for any person, whether it is religious or not.

Some of my friends go covered to work, uncover and cover back up when going home. When I am meeting with clients or global management I don’t cover completely, but will wear a headband, or a half cover. When regional management or local management wants a meeting, I use a scarf that is in the company colour, so it is still business professional.

We hope this gives you some ideas of ways you can incorporate your wrapping to fit your work environment, and that the plethora of amazing wraps shared by our lovely Tichel Tales group- Thanks Ladies!!- will give you even more inspiration!

The Girl with the Curly Hair: My Wrapping Journey. Guest Post by Anjae Hatley

A 1

Since starting to wrap ourselves,  Christina & I have had the opportunity to meet women from all different walks of life, with every type of wrapping journey and reason you can imagine.  And when Anjae shared a bit of her story with us in Tichel Tales- this beautiful, intelligent, articulate woman experiencing anxiety, depression, difficulty even leaving her home- we knew it was one we wanted to share with you all in the hopes that for any of you in a similar situation,  would be lifted, encouraged and inspired!

The Girl with the Curly Hair: My Wrapping Journey

Hello, I am the girl with the curly hair. I have always been known as the twin with the curly hair. Yes, I have an identical twin, but she has always straightened her hair. It was easy for people to tell us apart that way. At the time, I was ok with it, it made life easy for our teachers all through high school.  While growing up, I had struggled with my hair all through high school. I am biracial so I have super, super tight curls, and don’t get me wrong, I love my hair. It’s the Midwest, Illinois, weather that doesn’t like my curly hair. It doesn’t matter what I would put on my hair, I was constantly messing with it so it wasn’t frizzy, stayed in place, etc. My mother always said, “You have hair that people would die for.” Alright…what is a child supposed to say to that? When I would get my hair cut, the comments would flow, “Oh, you got the good hair.” Now, seriously what does that mean? “Good Hair?”, as to say that if I had any other combination of hair it wouldn’t be pretty? I guess I am lucky because I got the genes of my father, who is white, and then the genes from my great grandmother, who was also mixed. (She was the child of her mother and the man that owned her as a slave.) So, I got the “good hair.” This is such a harmful statement to make to any woman of any race/ethnicity. It not only shames them for not having what society deems as beautiful, but it gives them unreal expectations of who they should be based on what they look like.

A 3

Woman spend on so much time and money on their hair. I was spending at least a half hour just to keep my hair from going frizzy on me if I wanted to wear it down. Hair is one of the first things that people see when they meet you. For many women, it is part of their identity. If they don’t have the long, flowing hair or in my case the curly hair, then part of their identity was missing. I am going to compare this to my mental illness…I have a mental illness, but it is NOT who I AM. I am NOT MY ILLNESS. I have curly hair…but it is NOT who I AM. I am NOT MY HAIR.  After being diagnosed with my mental illness, I realized that I wanted to be seen for what I have to offer the world, not how people saw me because of my illness. Same goes for my hair. I didn’t want people to focus on my outward appearance, I wanted them to focus on what ideas I have and what was coming out of my mouth.

A 2

Anyone with curly hair knows this scenario: You are sitting somewhere and someone reaches out to touch your hair! Internal squealing as I type this.  Don’t touch my hair- you are stepping inside my personal bubble and that is not acceptable. And not to mention, my hair is very personal, it is not there for anyone and everyone to touch, because they think it is pretty or cool. My husband loves my curls and I wear it down for him when we are home.  He doesn’t even play with my hair, he just likes to see it down. (But if he ever grabbed for a curl, I wouldn’t object, I married him so it’s ok.)

A 4

In 2014, I started the first part of my Doctoral Program in Curriculum Design and Instruction. I will finish the Specialist degree this fall and start my doctorate classes in January. I noticed that after I started class and was a full time student again, my anxiety magnified. I am by nature an introvert and keep to myself for the most part. I don’t go out that often, and have a hard time being around a large group of people. So thank goodness that my class only has seven other people in it for the duration of the program! When I started wrapping, I noticed this calm come over me. I was at peace. The anxiety seemed to lessen and I was able to leave my house feeling confident and strong enough to face the world. I noticed that people didn’t comment on my appearance as much, they were focused on my work and my ideas.

A 5

With anxiety wrapping has allowed me to be more confident in myself. Yes, a scarf can do that. Think of Linus and his blanket…my tichels are my blanket. They are my security and for lack of better words, my armor when I leave the house. I have heard women mention that wearing head covering was their crown. I like this sentiment. Shouldn’t every woman feel as though she is royalty in this world? Shouldn’t we all feel a sense of strength and confidence in everything they do? For me, the answer to all of these questions is YES! We are all special in our own right and bring something to this world. Since I started my journey, I have found my authentic self. I no longer search for what is in style and spend hours worried about how I am perceived by others based on my outward appearance. (Though, I think many women can attest to the satisfaction they get when their wrap is on point!)  I am who I am supposed to be, a strong confident woman that knows she is going to change the world in some way. How will I do it?  That answer will come to me as I continue this lovely ride we call life.  But I can tell you this…I will be wearing a beautiful tichel when I do figure out what that will be!

Here Anjae shares some of her favorite tichels and styles

Thank you Anjae for sharing your story with us!

Tichel Storage

Tichel Storage Hanging Viscose Deanna J

There is no one way to store your scarves. Everyone is different, and we each have our own personal preferences.

What is important is that you make sure you have proper room to store your velvet headbands, your shapers, volumisers, accessories and scarves. No, I am not suggesting you should purge when you don’t have room, just make sure you don’t squash, crumple and eventually break what you have.

Some scarves are better stored when folded, others when hung up, and some twisted.
Look at how you receive your scarf when you purchase it in a store or online.

Tichel Storage Solid Color and New York Brights Deanna J

I went to several different ways of storing my scarves. They were hanging on hangers, hanging in a scarf-hanger, folded and put in a drawer, box or just stacked in a cupboard.
For my home & the available options, without breaking the bank, I ended up buying 6 clear boxes from a Dutch chain store.
I then looked to what I have, how I can divide hair things (hair pins, rubber bands, doughnuts in several sizes, hairnets, bobby pins & bun pins), the shapers and volumisers, the pins, sashes, flowers, headbands, buckles, pashminas, thin full cover scarves, sari scarves and scarves that are just not wide enough on their own but that work perfectly fine as a second or third scarf.
For my week, I usually plan which wraps I’d like, and are compliant with company policy, and then plan my outfits around it. I take the scarves, accessories and volumisers/shaper out that and hang them on a scarf hanger. My clothes will hang or lay in a designated cupboard, where the scarf hanger is too. So in the morning I can just take what I need & get dressed.

One key to staying organised: put everything away as soon as you are done with it in the designated spot.

One lady made a rack herself with left over floor moulding (on the sides) and wooden curtain rods (to hang the scarves on).Liezl Storage rack with moulding

And here- Christina, inspired by the above storage solution, used the 2 sides from her daughter’s old crib turned upright, using the spindled railing  to hold the scarves..

Some women hang their scarves on rods with small shower curtains.

“I have 2 chains suspended from the ends of a curtain rod hung on the wall. The rods are inserted into the chains on each end about 5 or 6 links apart. I am using 6 rods now just because I can’t reach up any higher than that. You could also use dowels and depending on the length of chain, the system is infinitely adjustable.”

Some women have a combination of hanging and folding.

And some of us don’t organize at all. And that is perfectly awesome too, because it is about you and what works for you.

13528116_123673508060753_8166859436729942520_o

I love seeing all the different ideas of everyone and seeing what works for each of us.

One last remark: with storage comes care.
How to care for your volumisers, shapers & velvet headbands? Most women wash them by hand and dry them by hanging them, some wash them in the machine on a gentle program.  What is recommended? That depends on how much you sweat on your head, how often you wear it, if you were around smokers or a bon fire, etc.
As for scarf washing: look at the label of the scarf. If you took the label of and aren’t sure: hand wash when isn’t silk. Silk scarves go to the dry cleaner that is what I do.

How do you store your scarves?

Beat the Heat

Too Hot to Tichel?  We’ve got you covered with some of our best Beat The Heat tips!

tie Dye Top Knot With Flower

{Tichel Type}  On those hot sticky days,  the type of scarf you choose can make all the difference in the world.  Save your silky scarves and pashminas for another time, and instead,  go for a lightweight breathable scarf.  Cotton, Gauze, or other lightweight scarves are good choices.  The Mimi Boutique has a great assortment of Turkish Tichels that we can’t get enough of!

Turquoise Paisley Israeli Turban

{One scarf wraps}  You can go as simple or fancy as you like even with a single scarf.  Solid colors, or bold patterns, you can dress them up or down with a sash, headband, pin or flower clip!  We like to call them #OneScarfBeautiful. 🙂

Jessica W. Chiffon scarf with a piece of lace. It was really warm that day but it felt really good.

Jessica W. said, “Chiffon scarf with a piece of lace.It was really warm that day but it felt really good.”

{Up up up}  Even if you like your tails- and I know I do- wraps that keep your hair up off your neck can really help keep you cool. Try a Side Flower or Bun, Regal, Turban or Bow.

Peacock Flower WrapTurkish tichelFuchsia Turban Bow Wrap with Sash out doorsScarf and shoe matchingChaya Pashmina

{Sun Protection}  Going to be outside and want some protection on your neck? The Princess Wrap will help cover your neck, and because it’s open at the bottom, will let the air flow.

To tie this style, you simply fold a square tichel into a triangle and place the folded edge across the top of your head, with the point going down the back. Take the 2 sides and knot them under the loose back.  Depending on how big your scarf is, your tails may only be big enough to knot and tuck in, but if they are long enough as this Turkish Tichel was, you can bring them around to the top of your head and tie another knot and tuck the ends.  That’s it!  Super quick and breezy! 🙂

Blue Flower and Leopard Princess Wrap

{Volumizers} If you are comfortable going without one,  just use your nonslip headband to keep your tichels in place- and you’ve saved yourself a whole layer! 😀

More comfortable with a volumizer?  Check out the Lace volumizers from Wrapped in Beauty by Wendy and Fabian!  Because they are lace you can get the most of the airflow through your tichel to your head helping to keep you cool. {No velcro either, so there’s nothing to snag your tichels!  Double Win!! Woot!}

Lace volumizer

And for the {Ultimate Beat The Heat trick}– Check out Alana’s Secret!

She uses a lunch box cooler placed in the freezer overnight, then placed under her volumizer before wrapping her tichel.  The volumizer then acts as an insulator, keeping her cool!  We love this trick!
